WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE EQUALITY MARYLAND PAC?
Equality Maryland's Political Action Committee was established in 2006 to help elect individuals at the state and local level in Maryland who are committed to working for fairness and equality for LGBT individuals, our families and our communities. The PAC also works to support fair-minded incumbents.
In 2006 the PAC endorsed 75 candidates for the state legislature; 80% of these candidates won! For some of our endorsed candidates, we made financial contributions and provided valuable volunteer help. In 2007 we also endorsed a candidate for Baltimore City Council who came within 743 votes of becoming the first openly gay City Councilor.
In 2010 elections, 73 of our 81 PAC-endorsed candidates were elected.
The PAC's top priority for the 2014 election cycle is to ensure that our legislative friends who helped us have our help in their bids for re-election.
For incumbents (or candidates who took a vote in 2012 on House Bill 438, The Civil Marriage Protection Act), the minimum criteria for endorsement includes completing the PAC questionnaire and having voting "yes" for HB 438 and supporting the Fairness for All Marylanders Act of 2014, which expands current law to include anti-discrimination provisions for transgender Marylanders. Additional considerations include viability (which includes, the candidate’s likelihood of success in the Primary or General Election, polling data, endorsements, previous political or governmental experience, fundraising, campaign plan, staffing and consultants and the ability to advance Equality Maryland issues and our legislative priorities and relationships with key constituencies.
