Baltimore, MD - As members of the national LGBT community strategize on where we go next in the fight for equality, many eyes are on the Free State .  Without a doubt there is great momentum for marriage equality, but Maryland is also gaining momentum in the work to ensure that transgender and gender variant Marylanders are provided equal treatment under the law.

“We are under no pretense that this fight will be easy.  It is up to us to capitalize on the recent momentum behind equality, said Lisa Polyak, Chair of the Equality Maryland Political Action Committee. “That is why Equality Maryland PAC is excited to be part of the push to elect candidates who will stand up for fairness.”

“This is a key election year in the movement for equality," said Morgan Meneses-Sheets, Executive Director of Equality Maryland.  "Through both our grassroots network and our political action committee, we intend to protect those lawmakers who have stood on the right side of history and put our stake in the ground in the districts of those who work against equal protections for our families."

Equality Maryland PAC sent questionnaires to over 300 candidates.  The minimum criteria for endorsement includes completing the questionnaire and support for EQMD’s two key legislative priorities – gender identity anti-discrimination protections and full civil marriage equality.  Additional considerations included viability, ability to advance legislation, and relationship with key constituencies.  The vetting process for endorsement is ongoing as the PAC continues to interview the growing number of electoral challengers. If warranted, additional endorsements will be announced when this process is complete.
The Equality Maryland PAC is proud to announce the first set of endorsements for the upcoming 2010 elections in November.

Annapolis, MD - Annapolis Mayor Joshua Cohen announced yesterday that city employees in Annapolis will be able to include same-sex domestic partners on their health plans starting July 1, 2010. Annapolis will join several local jurisdictions and the state government in providing benefits to same-sex partners.
"We applaud Mayor Cohen and his administration for their commitment to fairness," said Morgan Meneses-Sheets, executive director of Equality Maryland. "Annapolis now joins a number of local governments across the state in providing equal benefits for equal work."
At the announcement, Mayor Cohen declared, "The change will create a more equitable work environment and help make the city more competitive in attracting top talent."
Annapolis will join over a dozen local government entities across the state that offer domestic partner benefits including, Montgomery and Howard counties, and the cites of Baltimore, College Park, Greenbelt, Hyattsville, Mount Rainier and Takoma Park. Last year, Governor O'Malley extended benefits to the domestic partners of state employees.
"This is truly an important advancement - the first jurisdiction in Anne Arundel county to provide equal benefits to employees in committed, same sex relationships.  However, most of the 400+ state-level legal protections provided by the government through a civil marriage license still remain out of reach to thousands of committed couples throughout our state," said Ms. Meneses-Sheets.  "Only civil marriage here at home and an end to discrimination by the federal government will provide full and equal protection under the law."
"With the Annapolis city government's granting of equal benefits, the State updating the Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program to be inclusive of same sex couples and the recent Washington Post poll demonstrating a clear majority of Marylander voters in support of marriage equality for same sex couples (48% in favor, 44% opposed), it is clear that the tide is turning," added Ms. Meneses-Sheets.
"It is up to us to capitalize on the exciting momentum behind fairness and equality.  That is why Equality Maryland launched the Road to Equality Campaign.  Through the campaign, we are pushing for the election of fair minded candidates, enhancing our public education efforts and strengthening our activist network throughout the state.  We will not stop until we create true and lasting equality for all Marylanders," concluded Ms. Meneses-Sheets.
